Christchurch entrepreneurs Andrew Bradley (22) and Michael Marneros (27) have joined a growing list of investors to start their business online. In fact, when these two first decided to start a business the web was the first thing they looked at.
Marneros’ experience in web development and Bradley’s combined experience in the moving industry and a sales background since he left high school at 16, all came together when discussing a web business at a social occasion. What happened next can be found at www.emptytrucks.co.nz.
A desire to help moving companies maximise their assets and minimise costs, with fuel costs rising rapidly they set about creating a website for companies to register trucks (or space of) on the internet and have people inquire about using their services; often at a discounted rate. The result; a happening thing, with the website now only online for 6 months, they have 12 registered moving companies. Marneros says that this is an amazing response, as it takes considerable time to establish a business and build a clientele, to know that 6 months into a business that our services are in demand. It encourages us to keep moving our business forward. “Media” asks, “Does this mean that every trucking company in New Zealand should be registered on your web site?” “No Not at all,” replies Marneros. “It’s something that will help smaller companies and owner operators more than it will help bigger companies, bigger companies have always had the advantage in this market. What we are trying to do is level the playing field. To be user friendly so that business who are driving trucks around half full can start driving trucks around 90% full. If every small to medium transport business in New Zealand was using a system like this, they would be able to dramatically increase there income, with no comparable increase in costs. To most its a simple equation.” With Bradley now based in America, furthering not only his sales career, but linking with other web entrepreneurs, it gets exciting when you realise this is only the tip of ice-berg when you consider what the internet has to offer businesses and consumers. Bradley explains to “media” that “Linking consumers with better business opportunities is one of the best web opportunities available” He goes on to say, “It’s free to consumers, and business receive the critical additional revenue that they rely on to make an operating profit.” This has been happening overseas for the last 10 years, so we are way behind as a country. We have a ways to go but it is a start.
